Shearin meaning= The descendant of Scirwine(Bright Friend) This is a patronymic i.e. "the son of Shear", a complimentary personal nickname deriving from the medieval English "scher" or "schir" itself coming from the Olde English pre 7th Century "scir" meaning "bright" or "fair" and originally given as a nickname to a person of radiant beauty or one with fair shining hair.

Early Origins of the Shearin name

The surname Shearin was first found in County Donegal Irish for(Du'n na nGall),northwest Ireland in the province of Ulster, sometimes referred to as County Tyrconnel, where they held a family seat, some say before the Anglo Norman invasion of Ireland by Strongbow in 1172. However, others claim that it is and off shoot of the Prendergast Clan in County Mayo, where they adopted the Gaelic name of O'Sirin, and established themselves on the Donegal/ Fermanagh border about the year 1250.

The name Shearin is also prevalent in Cork county Ireland. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Thomas O'Sirin, which was dated 1606, born at Cork, County Cork, during the reign of King James 1 of England and V1 of Scotland, 1603 - 1625. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
