Background
Shell House was a triangular property on Edisto Island, wedged between the Crawford Plantation on the south, and Sandy Creek on the north.

By 1873 Shell House Plantation on Edisto Island was up for sale again. The sale ad stated it had 404 acres, a large dwelling house, a cotton house built about 4 years prior, a large commodious stable, and 9 framed laborers houses. Advertised by Louis D. DeSaussure[4]
By In 1875, free man, Jim Hutchinson, organized with 21 other freedmen, and was successful in purchasing the 404 acres of Clark’s Shell House Plantation.[5]
At one time Shell House Plantation was one of three plantations on Edisto Island owned by Ephraim Mikell Baynard. At 142 acres, it was a relatively small plantation with a small slave community. Baynard did not live here, preferring to reside at Rabbit Point Plantation.[6]
