Nathaniel
Nathaniel Shenton (bef.1700-bef.1766)
- Baptism only mentions father as Mr Shenton, no other Shentons found in Loughborough in that time period, except for the baptism of his probable brother Francis.
- Likely marriage for parents Francis Shenton of Barwell married Anne Stretton in 1693 in Leicestershire, England.[1] Francis (age 24), Tallow Chandler, married Anne Stretton (age 24) in St Margaret Leicester, or Barwell, Leicestershire, England. Richard Hoxton, cordwainer of Leicester, bondsman.[2]
- This appears to be a brother, Francis, child of Mr, was born in 1697 and baptised on 26 February 1697 in Loughborough, All Saints, Leicestershire, England.[3] Francis, son of Fran Shenton, was baptised on 26 February 1696 in Loughborough, Leicestershire, England. (no image)[4]
- Presumed brother Francis (age 25) married Anne Savage (age 30) in Loughborough, Leicestershire, England. Licence date 1723. Bondsman was William Stretton.[5]
- Mary Shenton of Barwell's will passed probate on 15 February 1721. She mentions Francis Shenton of Loughborough, tallow chandler, cousin as executor (Note: Cousin can mean Nephew)[6]
Possible father Francis
- Francis, child of Francis and Jane, was born in 1668 and baptised on 2 June 1668 in Earl Shilton, Leicestershire, England. (Earl Shilton is right next door to Barwell, this also matches marriage age to Ann Stretton).[7]
- My conclusion is that Francis (& Jane) is the son of Nathaniel and Elizabeth Kent. No other Shenton families seem to have the consistent names of Samuel, Francis and Nathaniel.
- See also: Reference: C 11/2286/91 Description: Short title: Shenton v Kent. Document type: Bill only. Plaintiffs: Francis Shenton, tallow chandler (executor of Mary Shenton, spinster deceased) both of Loughborough, Leicestershire. Defendants: Gregory Kent and Richard Dester. Date of bill (or first document): 1721.[8]
Wills
Will of Robert Shenton, gent of Alkington, Shropshire 1631
Will of Randle Shenton, clerk of Coppenhall, Cheshire 1621
Will of Randall Shenton, gent of Alkington, Shropshire 1641
Will of Nathaniel Shenton of Hinckley, Leicestershire 1714
(This Nathaniel is I think the son of Robert and Mary). His wife Elizabeth's estate passed probate in 1729 in Leicestershire, England. (not transcribed)[9]
Will of Mary Shenton, Spinster of Barwell, Leicestershire 1722
(son of Robert & Mary) Roberti Shenton died in about 1715 in London. Their will passed probate on 20 May 1715.[10]
Note: Not all names extracted
Gregory Kent of Great Sheepie (Sheepy Magna), clerk, written 7 August 1685, proved 14 May 1689.
Is this the brother of Elizabeth Kent, mother of Francis, Elizabeth & Mary?[11]
- William & Timothy, both of London, brothers
- Elizabeth Shenton, cousin, spinster
- Mary Shenton, cousin, spinster (sister of Elizabeth)
- Francis Shenton of Barwell, cousin, his 4 children by Jane his second wife: Francis, Timothy, Jane & Dorothy, all under 21, and child by his present wife
- Gregory & Thomas Kent, under 21, cousins, sons of brother Timothy
- sister Gibson of Grindon, Warks.
- Dorothy Tovey, sister
- Land in Warton, Kinsbury & Hurley, Warks.
William Kent, Citizen & Draper of London, written 20 November 1696, proved 1 December 1696.[12]
- Timothy Kent, brother, Gregory & Thomas his sons
- Francis Shenton of Barwell, cousin
- Sarah Kent, wife
- John Moxon, nephew
- John Harrison, cousin
The Will of Mary Chawner leaves a legacy to Sarah daughter of Francis Shenton. This is the child of his third wife, and I currently believe he married a Chawner but no marriages found. (An Anne Boyer married a Chawner in Hathern, but her husband was still alive when Sarah was born, so not her.) It's possible Chawner is the maiden name and she hadn't previously married. This is the right date for a marriage, but no other details found.[13][14]
