My Great great grandfather was George Claghorn Sherman. He was born in 1808 or 1809 in New York, possibly in Washington County. Family oral history says that George's father was a shipbuilder on Lake Champlain.
I have hit a brick wall in trying to find out who George's parents were and exactly where he was born. I am guessing that the Claghorn name is perhaps his mother's maiden name, or another family connection. i would really like to be able to trace the Sherman/Claghorn line!
George was married to Elizabeth Townsend, born 1813 in Tyringham, Berkshire, Mass. Their children were: George C. Jr, Jonathan (my great grandfather), Elizabeth (Crocker), Frederick, and Frances. They lived in the Syracuse area of NY, then moved to Rochester, MN about 1856. George was a shoemaker. He died in 1863.
