The purpose of this page is to provide a solid structure for Shtetl location categories.
For a previous discussion see: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1493700/proposal-categorization-structure-for-shtetls
The shtetl category location is subjective and depends on a country project's location/categorization protocols. If the the country has a different naming structure rather than using the default historical location category, it will be listed below.
There is an issue with using the historical district name within the category. There are mulitple villages located in Belarus and Ukraine which were part of the Second Polish Republic. (See image) Each country project should take care of the shtetls which were part of their now present day boundaries. For instance, a shtetl located in Belarus would be handled by a Belarus Project and not placed with Poland even if it were located in the Second Polish Republic. Not all projects are using historical categories, which poses an overlapping issue.
Tier: Category: Judaism ?? There should be a category named "Shtetls" that nest all the categories below.
- Category: Shtetls, Belarus
- Category: Shtetls, Latvia
- Category: Shtetls, Lithuania
- Category: Shtetls, Moldova
- Category: Shtetls, Poland
- Category: Shtetls, Romania
- Category: Shtetls, Russia
- Category: Shtetls, Ukraine
Poland
1. The majority of existing categories containing folks of the Jewish faith were created as location categories during 1938.
2. The Poland Project (PP) will not create historical categories for this time period . The PP only creates historical categories for the former lands of Prussia and Galicia. They are created for Prussia because the name of the village was typically different. They are created for Galicia because the "Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria" already has a project which has created roughly 95% of village categories for that region.
3. The Poland Project will rename all existing Congress Poland/Second Polish Republic categories to a shtetl category and it will be placed as a subcategory to the present day location.
4. The Poland Project will move any non-ethnic Jewish persons from those specific categories and place them in the present day category (present day categories can be used for profiles from any point in history); and also subsequently move any persons of Jewish faith from the location category to the shtetl category. The Poland Project may also create new Shtetl categories as they work on village categorization and batching.
These are just thoughts on renames. Any suggestions are welcome!
5. The name of the shtetl category in Poland should appear as such: Category: Shtetl, Village (gmina: XYZ)
- The use of the gmina provides the differenciation between villages which have the same name. No risk of creating duplicate categories.
- Use the gmina from the present day location, it is always found on Wikipedia.
- For example:
- Category: Shtetl, Babice (gmina: Trojanów), Poland
Explanation of the Shtetl category CIB:
{{CategoryInfoBox Cemetery
|parent=Shtetls, Poland
|parentsort= Village. This allows categorization on the parent level to alphabetize by village
|location= (en) present day location
|location1= (pl) present day location
|wikidataID=
|coordinate=
|webpage=
|webpagetext=JewishGen Communities Database
|project=Jewish Roots
}}
Blank CIB for quick copy/paste. If the pl and en categories exist for present day, please use them for location and location1. If those village categories need to be created, use the default "Pending Polish Categories" which is listed below. This is a maintenence category for the Poland Project and they will update the CIB with the proper present day category after it is found/created.
{{CategoryInfoBox Cemetery
|parent=
|parentsort=
|location=Pending Polish Categories
|location1=
|wikidataID=
|coordinate=
|webpage=
|webpagetext=JewishGen Communities Database
|project=Jewish Roots
}}
