Biography
Silk Hope Plantation was created by William Butler through a land grant in 1759.[1] Silk Hope came into the Thomas Savage family through the marriage of Thomas Savage to William Butler's daughter, Mary Elliott Butler. The Savage family lived winter and spring at Silk Hope and part time in Charleston, SC. When Thomas died he left his plantation and all on it, including the enslaved persons, to his wife Mary Elliott Savage.[2]
After Thomas Savage died in 1786 his widow sold the following as a group (120 enslaved persons) to Edward Darrell on 1 Feb 1792 for 4278 pounds sterling.. [3]

At the death of Mary Elliott Savage she left the Silk Hope Plantation to her son Benjamin Savage. However, Benjamin died unmarried and without issue in 1826 [5] and his property was divided up between his siblings. William Butler Savage received Silk Hope Plantation.
William Savage in 1835 emancipated a number of slaves. He put them on a ship going to Liberia.[6][1] [7] See the Ship Indiana for a complete list of persons on that ship including those mentioned below.

The plantation stayed in the Savage family until William Savage died. After his death it went to his sister Mary Ann Savage Clay and she sold it to Lewis Hines, whose family retained part of it through 1870.[8][9] 80 enslaved persons were sold at the same time.[10]
Some of the enslaved from Silk Hope Plantation ended up in the hands of Charles Manigault.[11]
