Sourcer Extension

This is a visual walk-through on how to use the Sourcer extension on WikiTree profiles.

Add the Extension

To begin with you will want to go to the WikiTree Apps page and locate the Sourcer extension. I am taking you to this page, instead of directly to the extension, so that you can bookmark it. There are plenty of helpful genealogy tools to use there.

Now you can scroll down until you see the Sourcer extension.

Once you've clicked on the WikiTree Sourcer link, you can scroll down a little on the new page to where it gives the install instructions. This allows you to pick the browser you use.

You can install it on Chrome, Firefox, or Safari.

Find a Profile To Work On

You can either use one of your own profiles to add sources to, or one from an Unsourced list. Here are some Unsourced Virginia profiles era 1800-1899. I am going to use an orphaned profile for Robert Giffen as an example. Robert is tagged as Unsourced, and has very little biography.

Use The Extension To Find A Source

Now on your browser bar, when you have a profile added, you should see the number [1] next to your url (address) bar.

Click on it and select "Search FamilySearch."

A search will open in FamilySearch, with the fields already filled in. You can see here there are several records I can use for Robert.

Add The Source to The Profile

Lets start with that marriage record, as it is from a logical year and we know that Robert lived in Belmont County, Ohio. Click on his name to bring up that record. Now you will see more of the information affiliated with the record.

Click on the [1] again at the top right of your browser. Now you will see that the choices have changed.

You now have choices to:

  1. Build Inline Citations
  2. Build Narrative with Citation
  3. Build Source Citation (Use this if you want all of the sources at the bottom)

For the example, I am going to be choosing the second choice: Build Narrative with Citation.

As you can see, there isn't much in Edit mode. I am going to delete the source for "Unsourced Family Tree..." Then, put my cursor before "He passed a way in 1842" and hit the enter bar four times. This gives you a nice space to put the marriage in between the two lines.

Put your cursor in the middle of those spaces and either hit Ctl-V on your keyboard, or right-click with your mouse and select "paste." This will add a nice entry of narrative plus an inline citation to the profile. Don't forget to delete the Unsourced template!

Now you can click on "Preview" to check and see if there are any issues (like red links).

You can see that it added that sentence with an inline citation for the marriage. Click on "Adding sources" and "Bio improvement" and then click on "Full Save:"

You can continue to add sources in this way to improve the profile. I hope that this helps you work "smarter not harder" as they say.

And Robert now has a nice, neat Sources section! Hooray!

Thank You!

Congratulations for completing this tutorial, and thank you for adding sources to those profiles!!
