State of NC for consideration of 50 shillings per 100 acres paid by John Simmons grants tract of 300 acres in Bute County on the Branches of the Cypress, Beginning at a Spanish oak Densons corner, East along his line 206 poles to a white oak, thence South 233 poles to a pine, thence East 17 poles to a maple his own corner, thence North along his line 354 poles to a red oak in his line, thence West 68 poles to Ellis’s corner, thence North along Ellis’s line 104 poles to a black jack, thence West 155 poles to a red oak and black jack, thence to the first station. 12 Feb 1779. William Green and Malachi Simmons and John Thomas, all of Franklin County; for consideration of $861 William Green sells tract in Franklin County on the South side of Tar River on the waters of the Wolf Pit and Tar River, Beginning at three gums on the Old Road, thence South 159 poles crossing a branch to a hickory, thence East 119 poles to a red oak near the road, thence South 229 poles crossing a branch to a hickory supposed to be Persons corner, thence East 86 poles to a white oak Will or Persons supposed line, thence North 474 poles to a large forked poplar on Miry Branch near the Wolf Pit, thence up the meanders of the said Miry Branch 115 poles to a stake, thence West 70 poles to a pine on the Old Road, thence along the same to the first station, containing 287 acres. Signed “William Green”. Witnesses: Philip H. James and Margaret Horton by mark “+”. Proved March term 1801 acknowledged by William Green.

Abner Gupton and William Simmons, both of Franklin County; for consideration of £10 current money of NC Abner Gupton sells tract in Franklin County, containing 4 acres, Beginning at a hickory Thos Hill’s corner, thence North along William Simmons to corner pine hickory pine and black jack, thence East to a red oak and post oak Abner Gupton’s corner, thence West to a black oak Thomas’s line, thence Hill’s line to the Beginning. Signed “Abner Gupton”. Witnesses: Henry Hill and Robert Gupton. Proved December sessions 1801 acknowledged by Abner Gupton.

No. 186. Malachi Simmons and John Thomas, both of Franklin County, purchased tract in Franklin County, containing 287 acres, on the South side of Tar River on the waters of the Wolf Pit and Tar River, as may be seen by deed dated this day of William Green for sum of $861, $200 of which is paid, $230 which is due on or before 1 May next, and the balance due on or before 1 Jan 1803; by virtue of these presents, said Simmons and Thomas covenant that the said 287 acres shall always be subject to the payment of the $661 and until this is paid the tract is given as security. Signed 13 Jan 1801 “Malachi Simmons” and John Thomas his mark “J”. Witnesses: Philip H. James and Margaret Horton. Proved December session 1801 acknowledged by Malachi Simmons.

William Simmons and Abner Gupton, both of Franklin County; for consideration of £10 current money of NC William Simmons sells tract in Franklin County, containing 4 acres, Beginning at a pine on the Cypress abound [Wrays?] corner, thence up said swamp to a willow oak a poplar, thence along a line of marked trees (East) to two pines, thence South as the swamp runs to the first station. Signed William Simmons his mark “X”. Witnesses: James Milner and Jas Byrd. Proved December session 1801 acknowledged by William Simmons.

John Thomas and Malachi Simmons, both of Franklin County; for consideration of $400 John Thomas sells tract in Franklin County that said John Thomas and Malachi Simmons purchased jointly of William Green of said county on the waters of the Wolf Pitt and Cedar Creek, Beginning at three gums at the Old Road on the South side of Tar River, thence South 159 poles crossing a branch to a hickory, thence East 169 poles to a red oak, thence South 229 poles crossing a branch to a hickory, thence East 86 poles to a white oak, thence North 476 poles to the Wolf Pit Swamp, thence up the meanders of the Merery Branch 115 poles to a stake, thence South 48 degrees West 70 poles to a pine on the Old Road, thence along the Lanes to the first station. Signed Jno Thomas by mark “X”. Witnesses: John Hunter and Wm Green Jurat. Proved on oath of Wm. Green. [The deed does mention the acreage, and the term of court during which it was proved is not identified.]

Wiley Simmons and Mary Simmons his mother and Abner Gupton, all of Franklin County; for consideration of £105 Virginia currency Wiley and Mary Simmons sell plantation and tract in Franklin County on the West side of Cypress Swamp, containing 125 acres, Beginning at an ash on the swamp in said Gupton’s corner, thence West to a post oak, thence South to a pine in William Hunt’s line, thence to a white oak on the swamp, thence up the swamp to the first station. Signed “Wiley Simmons” and Mary Simmons her mark “X” and Lekey Simmons her mark “X”. Witnesses: Jos’h Jones Jurat and Joseph Stevens his mark “X”. Proved on oath of Joshua Jones. [Court term not identified on deed.]

Thomas Nelms and Richard Symmonds, both of Franklin County; for consideration of £5 specie Nelms sells tract in Franklin County on the branches of the Cypress, containing 100 acres, Beginning at a Spanish oak W. Denson’s corner, thence East by said line to a red oak in Wilson’s line, thence by said line South to a small red oak corner in said line, thence West to a corner on a black jack and post oak in Parks line, thence North to the first station, it being part of a tract granted to said Thomas Nelms in the year 1780. Signed “Thos. Nelms”. Witnesses: W. Hunt, Noyal Nelms. Proved March Court 1785 on oath of Wm. Hunt Jr.

Matthew Simmons and John Simmons, both of Franklin County; for consideration of £100 specie Matthew Simmons sells tract in Franklin County on the waters of Cypress; Beginning at a pine the old line, running South 38 poles to a red oak, thence West 68 poles to a white oak, thence So 22 west 134 poles to a red oak, thence East 164 poles to a stake, thence North 159 poles to a stake in the old line, thence West to the Beginning, containing 100 acres. Signed “Matthew Symmons.” Witnesses: William Hunt Jurat and Robert Coggin. Proved September term [?] on oath of William Hunt.

Edward Denson and Elizabeth his wife and John Simmons, all of Franklin County; for consideration of £80 current money Edmond and Elizabeth Denson sell tract in Franklin County on the waters of the Cypress, containing 300 acres, being the same tract of land said Edmond Denson purchased of William Denson Dec’d, Beginning at a white [oak] Nelms line, thence along his line to a Spanish oak, thence North 58 poles to a pine root and some bushes supposed Parks corner, thence West along his line 230 poles to a hickory stump in Simmons line, thence North along his line 100 poles to a pine Carrs corner, thence East along his line 204 [poles] to a red oak his corner, thence North along his line 68 poles to a b. jack in his line, thence East to a pine, and thence to the first station. Signed “Edmond Denson” and Elizabeth Denson her mark “X”. Witnesses: Thos. Brickell and John Carr by mark “x” Jurat. Proved March term 1793 proved on oath of John Carr.

John Simmons and Mary his wife and John Cope, all of Franklin County; for consideration of £50 current money John and Mary Simmons sell tract in Franklin County on the waters of the Cypress, containing 300 acres, being the same tract of land said John Simmons purchased of Edmond Denson, Beginning at a white oak formerly Nelms line, thence along his line to a Spanish [oak], thence North 58 poles to a pine root and some bushes supposed Parks corner, thence West along his line 230 poles to a hickory stump in Wm Simmons line, thence North along his line 100 poles to a pine Carrs corner, thence along his line 204 poles to a red oak his corner, thence North along his [line] 68 poles to a black jack in his line, thence East to a pine, and thence to the first station. Signed “John Simmons” and Mary Simmons her mark “*”. Witnesses: H. Simmons and Richard Swanson. Proved March term 1793 acknowledged by said John.

No. 36. 27 Aug 1787. Richard Simmonds of Wilks County, Georgia, and William Simmons of Franklin County; for consideration of £100 current money Richard Simmons sells tract in Franklin County on the waters of the long branch bounded by lines of Edmund Denson Moses Stallings Parks, containing 100 acres. Signed “Richard Simmons”. Witnesses: [H?] Hunt and Henry Simmons Jurat. Proved March term 1793 on oath of Henry Simmons.

William Simmonds and Elias Bowden, both of Franklin County; for consideration of £50 current money Simmons sells tract in Franklin County on the branches of the Cypress, containing 100 acres, Beginning at a Spanish oak Cope’s corner, thence East by said line to a red oak Stallings’s line, thence by a line South to a red oak, thence West by a line to a black and post oak, thence along a line North to the first station. Signed William Simmons by mark “X”. Witnesses: H. Simmons Jurat and John Simmons. Proved March term 1795 on oath of H. Simmons.

No. 312. 2 Oct 1797. John Simmonds and Abner Gupton, both of Franklin County; for consideration of £160.6.3 current money of NC Simmonds sells tract in Franklin County, containing 160 acres, Beginning at a post oak on the east prong of the Cypress, thence West 241 poles to a pine, thence South 36 poles to a pine, thence West 58 poles to a red oak, thence South 64 poles to a white oak and hickory, thence East 164 poles to the Cypress Swamp, thence down said swamp to the other prong of said swamp, thence up the meanders thereof to the first station. Signed “John Simmons” and Polly Simmons by mark “x”. Witnesses: Jos. Jones and Joseph Stephens. Proved December sessions 1797 acknowledged by John Simmons.

No. 313. 2 Nov 1797. Henry Symmonds and Abner Gupton, both of Franklin County; for consideration of £12 Virginia money Symmonds sells tract in Franklin County on the South side of the East prong of Cypress Swamp, containing 20 acres, beginning at a post oak in said swamp John Carr’s corner, thence his line South 100 poles to a maple in a branch, thence down said branch as it meanders to said swamp, thence up said swamp as it meanders to the first station. Signed “Henry Simmons”. Witnesses: Benjamin Simmons and Reuben Stallings Jurat. Proved December sessions 1797 on oath of Reuben Stallings.

Joseph Stephens and Nasey Simmons, both of Franklin County; for consideration of £20 current money Stephens sells tract in Franklin County on Cypress Swamp; Beginning at a post oak, South 100 poles to two white oaks John Simmons corner, thence his line East 70 poles to a pine his corner, thence his line North 32 poles to a pine his corner, thence along a line of marked trees to a corner pine, thence West to the first station, containing 44 acres. Signed “Joseph Stephens.” Witnesses: H. Simmons, John Simmons Jurat. Proved June term 1798 on oath of John Simmons.

No. 96. 14 Jan 1797. John Carr and Henry Simmons, both of Franklin County; for consideration of £76.10 North Carolina currency Carr sells tract in Franklin County on the waters of the Cypress, containing 51 acres, Beginning at a pine John Cope’s corner in said Henry Simmons line, thence North along his line 90 poles to to some small red oaks, thence East 102 poles to a white oak, thence South 80 poles to a hickory in said Cope’s line, thence along his line 102 poles to the Beginning, it being part of the tract whereon said Carr now lives. Signed John Carr by mark “x”. Witnesses: William Hunt, Benjamin Simmons Jurat. Proved March Court 1798 on oath of Benjamin Simmons.

No. 143. 12 Nov 1796. Thomas Simmons and Matthew Simmons, both of Franklin County; for consideration of £100 Thomas Simmons sells tract in Franklin County on both sides of Bull Branch, agreeable to his Father’s will, including 100 acres of land. Signed Thomas Simmons by mark “S” and Elizabeth Simmons by mark “x”. Witnesses: John Simmons Jurat. Proved December Court 1798 on oath of John Simmons.

No. 199. 15 Dec 1798. Matthew Simmons and “Nancy” Simmons of one part and Joshua Abernathy of the other, all of Franklin County; for consideration of £200 sell tract in Franklin County on both sides of Bull Branch; Beginning at a pine, running West to a post oak, thence South to a stake, thence West to a stake Tunstalls line, thence So to a Spanish oak, thence East to a post oak, thence No to a post oak Guptons line, thence West to a hickory, thence North to a red oak, thence East … red oak, thence North to first station, containing 246 acres. Signed “Naysay Simmons” and “Matthew Simmons.” Witnesses: Joshua Coggin Jurat and Abner Gupton. Proved March term 1800 on oath of Joshua Coggin.

No. 249. 19 Oct 1803. Benjamin Simmons of Franklin County and Benjamin Bridgers Senr of Nash County; for consideration of £126 sells tract in Franklin County on Cypress Swamp, Beginning at a “willar” oak at the mouth of a branch at the letter H, thence up the branch to a post oak in the head at the letter I, thence along a line of marked trees South 25 deg East 74 poles to an ash in the long branch of the letter K, thence down the meanders thereof to Reuben Stallings line at the letter L, thence West 30 poles to a hickory at the letter M, thence North 70 poles to a gum and hickory at the letter N, thence West 78 poles to the Cypress Swamp at the letter O, thence up the meanders thereof to the first station, including 70 acres. Signed “Benjamin Simmonds”. Witnesses: Jno Dossey and John Carr by mark “+”. Proved March sessions 1804 acknowledged by Benjamin Simmons.

No. 31. 17 Dec 1802. Malichi Simmons and William Green, both of Franklin County; for consideration of $690 Simmons sells tract whereon said Simmons now lives containing 284½ acres on the South side of the Tar River and in the waters of the same, Beginning at 3 gums at the old road near the crossroads and running as may more fully appear reference being had to deeds of William Green to Malachi Simmons and Jno. Thomas bearing [date] 13 Jan 1801. Signed “Malachi Simmons.” Witnesses: Green Hill and Edward Tansel. December term 1802, acknowledged by Malachi Simmons.

No. 32. 24 Aug 1802. William Simmons, red head, and Abner Gupton, both of Franklin County; for consideration of £210.5 current money of NC, Simmons sells tract in Franklin County on North side of Cypress Swamp, Beginning at a maple on the said Creek, thence running down various courses of said creek to a pine, thence along sd Guptons line to the Hog Pen branch, thence up the said branch to the head, thence by a line of marked trees to a corner black jack, thence down a line of marked trees to hickory Tom hills corner, thence East Hills line to a red oak, thence North to a post oak and red oak, thence West to a black jack and hickory in the old [line], thence down a line of marked trees to the first station to “conclude” 104 acres of land. Signed “William Simmons.” Witnesses: Jos’h Jones, James Baker, Alsey Jones [by mark]. March term 1802 acknowledged by William Simmons.

No. 109. 26 Feb 1807. William Simmons and Benjamin Bridgers Senr., both of Franklin County; for consideration of $575, Simmons sells tract containing 115 acres on the Cypress Swamp in Franklin County, Beginning at a gum and maple in the mouth of a small branch at the letter E, thence up said branch to the head and then along a line of marked trees to 3 small red oaks in the spring branch at the letter F, thence down the meanders thereof to a gum on the Cypress Swamp at the letter G, thence down the Swamp as it meanders to a willow oak in the mouth of a branch at the letter H, thence up said branch to a post oak in the head at the letter I, thence along a line of marked trees South 25d East 74 poles to an ash in the Long Branch at the letter K, thence up the meanders thereof to the first station. Signed “William Simmons.” Witnesses: Thos. Lanier Jurat, H. Arrington. Franklin County March session 1808, proved on oath of Thos. Lanier Esq.

No. 110. [No date; probably 26 Feb 1807]. John Simmons of Franklin County does make over and release to Benjamin Bridgers Senr. of Franklin County all right, title, and interest in 15 acres that is included in the within deed from William Simmons to the said Benjamin Bridgers Senr.’ the said 15 acres is part of a piece of land that I swoped for with Reuben Stallings. Signed “John Simmonds.” Witnesses: Thos. Lanier Jurat, H. Arrington. Franklin County March session 1808, proved on oath of Thos. Lanier Esq.

No. 176. 3 May 1803. John Simmons and Elias Bowden, both of Franklin County; for consideration of $4, Simmons sells 1 acre on the Long Branch, Beginning at a white oak on the South side of the Long Branch, thence running North 50 yards to a post oak, thence West 138 yards to a pine, thence South 50 yards to a white oak, thence East to the first station. Signed “John Simmonds.” Witnesses: Moses Johnston, Wm. H. Goodloe, Wm. Bowden Jurat, Willis Boon. Franklin County September sessions 1808, proved on oath of William H. Goodloe.
