Surnames/tags: simmons newfoundland
The goal of this project is to document the Simmons of Newfoundland on Wikitree. The majority of profiles associated with the Simmons of Newfoundland are orphaned profiles remaining from an old GEDCOM upload of a well-explored and documented tree on Ancestry.com, and need to be claimed, updated, and properly formatted.
The Simmons family has a deep root in Newfoundland in and around the area of Conception Bay. Current known records stretch back to the the mid 1700's/early 1800's.
Family lore suggests that the Simmons founder arrived in Newfoundland by boat from the Isle of Saba, a Caribbean island known as a pirate stronghold at the time. Multiple branches of the family report of family lore of being descended from pirates, although little research has been done on the topic. A DNA link between the Simmons of Newfoundland and the Simmons of Saba has not been established thus far due to a lack of testing.
Some external sources have done genealogical research into the Simmons family, including the Simmons of Newfoundland Blog, written by Colin Simmons, and a book published by the same Colin Simmons entitled The Simmons Family of Newfoundland.
Closely associated family names from the same area are Green, Pynn, Pike, and Taylor.
Any and all help is appreciated with the project.
