This 1860 enumeration demonstrates some laziness on the part of whomever provided the information (Richard himself or his overseer, J. Morse. Enslaved people are grouped in rough age cohorts -- 10 26 year old men, 10 20 year old men, etc. It is likely that the ages were more varied than this, but that Richard wasn't interested in accuracy. This makes it difficult to connect these enslaved people with more specific records after Emancipation.

Former Slaves Identified by Name

• Dolly Epps (~1835- ): Identified Richard Lynch of Bayou Teche, Louisiana, as her former owner on Freedmen's Bureau employment document.^[5]
• Carry Cocust should have been on the 1860 census, unless he got her shortly afterwards. She was born in 1837^[6] and would have been 23 years old.
• Smith was born in 1785,^[7] but does not match with any of the ages above.
