This page's purpose is to record the enslaved people owned by Emaline Gates and attempt to connect them to their families.
Named Slaves: These slaves were inherited by Emaline (Harman) Woodward from her husband Benjamin Alexander Gates's Will. Who passed in 1853, Meriwether County, Georgia. Emaline passed sometimes later after 1880 as she is found in the census records. These slaves did become freemen in 1865.
Mingo Gate who is a faithful slave and being the laws of Georgia can not be set free. Therefore he shall be favored foreward in case he becomes aged or inference will be provided for.The two hundred dollars given to my wife previously given and put into common stock, she is to take out before the division of my estate." (Item 2, page:218, Image 134 of 705)
These slaves were to be inherited by Benjamin Kolb Gates and Samuel Martin Gates (Grandsons). Some slaves were inherited by Samuel Martin Gates before the death of Emaline and before the end of the war. They are listed in his will.
