History

On March 2, 1807, Congress passed a law prohibiting the importation of slaves into the United States beginning January 1, 1808. However, slaves could still be bought and sold (and transported) within the country. The same law that banned the foreign slave trade also regulated the internal transportation of slaves, requiring that all vessels of 40 tons or more carrying slaves in the coastwise trade file duplicate manifests at the ports of origin and destination, pledging that the slave had not been imported into the U.S. after 1807. Ports of departure or intended arrival stretched from Baltimore, Maryland, to Texas on the Gulf of Mexico.

About this FSP

This page specifically lists the slaves on the manifests for the ship UNCAS[1]. The slave traders Franklin & Armfield (Isaac Franklin and John Armfield ) were listed as the owners/shippers along with Theophilus Freeman, Robert W. Simington, Bogart & Hoops (traders), and Nathaniel Boush (Master of the Uncas). This manifest included the name of the vessel, its ports of departure and arrival, dates of certification by the collector of customs (or surveyor), the Captain or master’s name, and a description of each slave on the vessel, including name, age, sex, height (see original), name of owner or shipper, and race/color. Franklin & Armfield were the country's largest slave traders and owners. In this free space page, unless otherwise noted, they are named as owners and shippers. For the enslaved without last names they have been given Armfield's LNAB.
