Charles Dehart held slaves for many years. The names of most of these slaves remain unknown at the time of this writing.

Charles Dehart was 31 in 1840 when the U.S. Federal Census was conducted. That year Charles and Nancy had been married for 5 years; they did not yet have children. It was the first time Charles had appeared in a census apart from his father's home. The 1840 U.S. Federal Census listed Charles Dehart with four young slaves--2 males and 2 females.

In 1850, the U.S. Federal Census showed that Charles Dehart, now listed as 41, and Nancy, 29, have had their only child, a son, William Green Dehart, who was then age 7. In 1850, the U.S. Federal Census Slave Schedules show that Charles Dehart had a total of 8 slaves, kept in two different locations. The two youngest slaves, females ages 2 and 6, were kept at a location either next door to or with Charles's brother-in-law, Fountain F. Howell. Perhaps Charles had purchased the young slaves from Fountain and they were living there with their mother until they were older. The other 6 slaves were at the location of Charles's farm.

One of the slaves that Charles Dehart owned was Mariah/Maria, who was registered in the Virginia Slave Birth Index when she gave birth. Mariah gave birth to John on 2 May 1853, to Statira A. in January of 1857, and to Odilay on 23 March 1860.

In 1860, the U.S. Federal Census Slave Schedules show Charles Dehart, now 51, holding 11 slaves.
