Fountain Howell held slaves for many years.

Fountain Howell was age 30 in 1840 when the U.S. Federal Census was conducted. The Howell family farm was just getting started for the young family, which included Fountain, his wife Nancy, age 26, and their infant son, Elijah, age 1 year. The 1840 U.S. Federal Census lists Fountain Howell [poorly transcribed for this source by Ancestry as "Lountan Hewell" but clearly visible in the image as "Fountain Howell"] with 1 slave, a young male between the ages of 10 and 23.[1]

In 1850, the U.S. Federal Census Slave Schedules show Fountain Howell, now age 40, with 6 slaves.[2] One of the slaves was probably Morning, an enslaved woman purchased for $200 at an auction in 1848 from the estate of Fountain's father-in-law, Elijah Dehart, after the death of his widow, to whom Morning had been loaned for her lifetime. Morning was valued at a lower valuation than other enslaved women sold at the same auction, and thus was probably an older woman past childbearing years, which is reflected in the 1850 and 1860 census records.
