More information from will:

ROSA

  • Rosa- no surname listed. Don't know if she had been a slave, but assume so and will add a enslaved profile page for her. She is referred to in Alex's will as a 'servant' not a slave and she is not listed in the inventory or distribution, only in his will. Therefore, she may have been a slave who had already been freed. Her age is not listed, but she is referred to as 'old' and Alex. freed all slaves at age 31, so she may have stayed on there and have been working for Alex. for a long time.
  • Quote from Alex's Will[1] [see image 108]" I give to my old and faithful servant Rosa for her great attention to me and my family the house and lot whereon she now lives during her natural life, together a sufficiency of firewood to be cut and hauled to her door, as also the of two hundred dollars per year to be paid out of my estate."

Old Abigail

  • Abigail is listed in Alex's inventory as 56 years old and infirm. No "years to serve" are listed and she is not listed with any monetary value.
  • Quote from Alex's Will[2] [see image 108]"" I give to my old Abigail a home on the farm and the privilege of the room she now occupies, as also a support from my children jointly during her life, together with the annual sum of ten dollars to be paid out of my estate as long as she lives without reference to the support as above left her."
