Research Notes
- Some of these enslaved people also appear in the records of Hubbard Cozart, Allen's father. See Slaves of Hubbard Cozart. And some appear in brother Simeon Cozart's profile.
- The inventory of Allen W. Cozart's estate names 47 people, but the list of allotments reports only 41 named adults plus 6 people indicated only as "child" of a mother. Six people on the petition list do not appear on the allotment list, and therefore are apparently the six children: Boson, Kinch, Clary, Mary, Alice, and Cassandra. It has not been possible to match the mothers with the children.
- Note that all of these inheritance arrangements ceased when Emancipation was declared in 1865.
- The estate records Allen W. Cozart include at least 3 copies of the inventory of the enslaved people, with some variety in the people's names. Image 1459, used here, has the clearest handwriting. However, matching the inventory to the allotment list remains imperfect with 2 Nelsons, 2 Marys, 1? Will/William, a woman(?) called M Delar or Dela or Dilly, and a man(?) called Dillen or Line.
