Slaves of Benjamin Chaires

Benjamin C Chaires owned hundreds of slaves that worked his Verdura Plantation, Leon County, Florida and Fauntleroy Plantation, Leon County, Florida. In the 1830 census Benjamin was in Magnolia, Leon, Florida. He owned 213 slaves.[1]

Slaves Purchased

In 1833 Benjamin Chaires purchased from Wm G. Burgess in Leon Co, FL:[2]
In 1836, he purchased the Fauntleroy Plantation for $25,000 from George Fauntleroy. The property covered 800 acres and came with everything including 57 slaves.[3]

1833 sold to Green and Joseph Chaires, trustees for Mary Ann Burgess:[4]
In 1835 Ben Chaires sold the following enslaved to Jesse Willis:[5][6]

Slaves Managed

In 1833, Mary Ann Burgess wished to take
to New Orleans, LA. Isaac Preston and Jacob Wilcox Esq. attorneys in New Orleans are to take charge and manage the slaves, however personally restricting them from selling or disposing of said slaves.[7]

Public notice for a slave sale on June 29, 1842 near Tallahassee[8]

After his death in 1838, a public notice was posted on 29 Jun 1842 for the sale of slaves from Fauntleroy Place. They included:

"Agreement for division of Negroes purchased by Thomas Fitch and Benjamin Chaires"

"Providence St. Johns 10 May 1820
On a division of the gang of negroes which we purchased from George Atkinson [a resident of Camden County, Georgia] the following number Thirty two belong to Benjamin Chaires namely
we agree that the same negroes shall remain at planting at St. Johns and the Beach place on Amelia Island till the present crop is gathered and in equal proportion to remain till the crop is prepared and sent to market."[9]
