History

Christopher Jenkins (1790-1830) was of Charleston County, South Carolina.[1] He lived on Edisto Island, Charleston County, and grew up on his family's property called Peter's Point Plantation. This property was inherited when his father, Christopher Jenkins (1769-1794) died. Like his father, Christopher Jenkins was a planter. Peter's Point Plantation grew "Sea Island Cotton" and was worked by the large number of slaves that he and his family owned.

Christopher Jenkins owned the following properties:[2]

  • Peter's Point Plantation[3]
  • property on John's Island, this was for sale after his death[4]
  • property in St. Bartholomew's Parish called Jenkins Island
  • and property in the City of Charleston

Slaves

Christopher Jenkins was a slaveholder. When he died in 1830 his will and his probate inventory named and valued the slaves on his property. It is unknown if any these slaves were on the Peter's Point Plantation. His probate inventory states they were inventoried on John's Island.[5][2]

Note: the groupings for these slaves do not appear to represent family relationships. It is not clear from the estate inventory what the purpose of the groupings might be.

For more information please see Peter's Point Plantation page.

Research Needed

  • There are 2 Toms listed in the father's estate inventory. It is not clear which corresponds to this person, although Tom Salvidore was passed to this owner.
  • There are 2 Sampsons in this listing. Which is connected to Sampson cannot be determined yet.
  • There are Adams in this listing. Neither is listed in the father's documentation.
