Research Note

The transcription for the 1840 Census record does not match the original record for "Danl Mays." Further exploration is needed.

Entire Hinds County, MS 1860 Slave Schedule has been checked for any entry for Daniel. None found. What happened to the 31 enslaved people from the 1850 slave schedule? His wife, Elizabeth L (Rigg) Mayes appears on the 1860 slave schedule as owner of 9 people and on the 1860 census as owner of $8000 real estate, $9000 personal estate. Did Daniel give part of his property to his wife early knowing he was near the end of his life? See her profile for those sources.
