Introduction

Davis Hicks (1803-) lived in Lawrence County, Alabama and Cherokee County, Texas but was supposed to be one of the largest slave owners in Baldwin County, Alabama.

Davis Hicks was living in Hawkins, Tennessee in 1840. He had no slaves listed on the census.[1]

1850 Lawrence County, Alabama

Davis Hicks was living in Lawrence, Alabama in 1850.[2] He had no slaves listed on the 1850 U.S. Census (Slave Schedule) that I have been able to find. (Flamer-1 00:07, 12 August 2023 (UTC))

1860 Baldwin County, Alabama

He was living in Cherokee, Texas in 1860 and had 13 slaves in Baldwin County, Alabama.[3]

1860 Cherokee County, Texas

He is not listed on the 1860 U.S. Census (Slave Schedule) in Cherokee, Texas as a slave owner, but three of his children are listed. Notice that Francis Hicks lived with him as shown on the 1860 U.S. Census (Population Schedule).[4]

  • Davis C. Hicks as David C. Hicks had one female slave, 14 years old.[5]
  • Francis Hicks as F. M. Hicks had five slaves.[6]
  • Lucille Hicks as Lucy Hicks had eight slaves.[7]

Research Notes

Davis Hicks was credited with being one of owners of the most number of slaves in Baldwin County: 130, but when I checked the source and 20 pages after it, I only found 13 slaves. I did not check all pages. (Flamer-1 01:29, 12 August 2023 (UTC))
