Background
This pages enumerates the slavery history of Dunstan Banks (1800-1881) in Georgia and Mississippi.
Importation of Enslaved into Georgia
8 Aug 1831 - Dunstan Banks imported 12 enslaved persons into Elbert County, Georgia, from location unknown.[1]
- Dick Banks (abt.1796-)male, age 35
- Jacob Banks (abt.1796-) 30 or 35
- Demsey Banks (abt.1807-) about 24
- Nelson Banks (abt.1814-) about 17
- Sarah Banks (abt.1815-) a female about 16
- Susan Banks (abt.1817-)about 14
- Mary Banks (abt.1818-)about 13
- William Banks (abt.1821-) about 10
- Ellick Banks (abt.1821-) about 10
- Bob Banks (abt.1822-) about 9
- Sam Banks (abt.1824-)about 7
- Louisa Banks (abt.1825-)about 6
The following four from the list above -- all under the age of 18 -- are also listed in the records of Dunstan's brother Henry Banks (1804-1846) as having been imported just one date later (9 August 1831) into Elbert County. These four people are listed at exactly the same ages, three described as "yellow" in both Dunstan and Henry's records, with Nelson listed as "Mulatto" -- words during these times meaning light skin -- so they are undoubtedly the same people. It's not known why four of the 12 on Dunstan's record are listed a second time on Henry's, but perhaps Dunstan passed on these four young people to his brother Henry, thereby possibly separating them from their family/ies.

1866 Census Lowndes County
Under the section for "Freedmen, Free Negroes, and Mulattoes" there is one female aged between 20-30 in his household. This person was not on the 1870 census with Dunstan.
Freedmen's Bureau Records, Lowndes County, 1866
Freedmen's Bureau Labor Contract, several pages and names of workers[2] Though these people may in 1865 still have been called by their enslaver's surname (Banks), by the time of the 1870 Census (see below) they used different surnames.
- Charles Dickerson (abt.1835-)
- Betsy Banks (bef.1848-) wife of Charles
- Dabney Watson (abt.1837-)and his 3 sons
- John Banks (bef.1848-) and his wife and 2 children
- William Banks (bef.1848-) and his wife
- Lacy or Jacy Banks (bef.1848-) wife of William
- Stephen Banks (bef.1848-) and his wife and 1 child
- Henry Banks (bef.1848-)
- Wesley Banks (bef.1848-)
- Fleming Dickerson (abt.1848-)
Separately from the listing above, the name of Dabney's wife appears on a page regarding the payment of food for their children:
Free People of Color: 1870 Census Lowndes County, Mississippi
1870 census in Lowndes County, Mississippi lists the following people who had signed labor contracts with Dunstan Banks five years earlier (see above): Dabney Watson (abt.1837-) , with his 3 sons; Fleming Dickerson; Charles Dickerson (abt.1835-) , with his wife Elizabeth Dickerson (abt.1833-); and, on a separate page regarding food to be purchased for the children, Dabney's wife Mary Watson (abt.1830-).[3] It's apparent that they claimed different surnames after Emancipation, after being known before then by first names only, or with the enslaver's last name. Profiles of all have been written with the correct surnames of free people.
In addition to those people appearing on labor contracts, the names of the six children of Charles and Elizabeth appear on this 1870 Census. Based on their birth dates, the four older children were born enslaved, the two-year-old was born free, as may have the 5-year-old depending on what part of 1865 (before or after June) he was born.
- Wilson Dickerson (abt.1859-) Farm Laborer
- Margaret Dickerson (abt.1860-) Farm Laborer
- Willie Dickerson (abt.1861-)
- Albert Dickerson (abt.1863-)
- Fleming Dickerson (abt.1865-)
- Charles Dickerson (abt.1868-)
Freedmen's Bureau Complaint - Henry Partwood against Dunster Banks, complains that he would not pay full value for boards, 20 Oct 1867[4] Is this the Henry from the above Labor Contract?
