Background

Elias Lynch Horry died in 1831. His estate named a number of enslaved persons in the codicil of his will, and in his probate inventory. They were located in Prince George Winyaw. Prince George Winyaw is currently located in Georgetown County, South Carolina.

In Will

In a codicil to his will, dated 10 Sept 1830, Horry bequeathed enslaved persons to Elias Horry Deas of Charleston, a physician. Deas was to sell the enslaved and the money to be invested in stock, and apply the interest or dividends for the maintenance and support of Mary Scott, a colored woman, otherwise called Mary Horry, and her children and for no other purpose.[1][2]
