Slaves of Elijah Simkins in St Johns County, Florida in 1860
Also a native of Edgefield County, South Carolina, Elijah C. Simkins arrived in Florida about 1850 and by 1860 resided in Orange Mills near the St. Johns River. In 1856, he acquired eighty acres in section 20, township 9 south, range 28 east, property that was supported by the St. Augustine-Palatka Road. A lumber merchant, Simkins claimed $10,000 in real estate and $39,000 in personal estate by 1860. Part of the latter consisted of fifty-two slaves, a workforce that harvested timber from his holdings and worked his plantation lands.[3]
By the 1860 Slave Schedule census, E C was a slave owner in St. Johns, Florida, United States. He owned 53 slaves.[4]
