Elizabeth B. Barbour, administrator of Philip Barbour's estate, sold the following slaves to Levi Jones: Peter & his wife Winney, Henry, Peter, Lowry, Sally, Phillis, Lizzy & James (children of Peter & Winney), Soloman, Lucinda & Francis (Lucinda’s child).[1]

Levi sold the following slaves to Elizabeth Barbour: Peter & his wife Winney, Henry, Peter, Lowry, Sally, Phillis, Lizzy & James (children of Peter & Winney), Soloman, Lucinda & Francis (Lucinda’s child).[2]

In Elizabeth Barbour's last will and testament, dated 22 Aug 1851, she mentions various enslaved people (mostly to name to whom the money that hiring them out brings in should go):[3]

  • slave Lowry was inherited by Philip Jones, son of Elizabeth Barbour Jones.
  • 300 dollars to grandson Owen Glass, which is to come from hiring out John
  • then 300 dollars to the guardian of Owen Glass, which again is to come from hiring out John (after 300 dollars is accrued and paid to Owen Glass)
  • 300 dollars to granddaughter Anna M Barbour (to be given when she reaches age 21, or gets married, or sooner if the executor sees fit), which is to come from hiring out Jim
  • to executor William S Jones, she leaves Peter ("viz: young Peter") in trust, to hire out; the funds from which are to be saved and interest accrued until such time as her grandsons Philip Barbour and Samuel (fka Clay) Barbour (sons of Samuel G. H. Barbour) are old enough to go to school. The funds are supposed to pay for their schooling.
  • when Philip and/ or Clay Barbour reach the age of 21, she gives them Peter and all funds raised by hiring him out
  • to her grandson Philip Jones, she gives Lowry
  • if any or all of these people she is leaving money and/ or enslaved people to die before they are of age or before they have received all the money she's leaving them, she then leaves everything and everyone to her daughter Elizabeth Jones, who is her only living child
  • and when Elizabeth Jones dies, all the property and funds left to her should be distributed equally amongst Elizabeth Jones' children and their heirs

Research Notes

  • Elizabeth Barbour does not appear in the1850 slave schedule, but she was living in the household of her daughter and son-in-law William Jones. William does appear in the slave schedule, with 16 enslaved people, three of whom are listed as fugitive. Perhaps these people are the same as those named in Elizabeth's will?[4]
