Census Records
Elizabeth Winder inherited slaves when her husband, Edward Stoughton Winder (1798-1840), died in 1840. That year's census lists the people she owned by age range and sex, and the 1850 and 1860 slave schedules list them by age, sex, and color.
Although the census records do not include slaves' names, there are other records that reveal the names of some of the people she owned. See below.
1840 Edward Winder died in March, 1840. The census taken in June of that year shows Elizabeth as head of a large household in Easton, Talbot, Maryland.[1] Altogether there were ten free white persons, one free colored person, and 27 slaves as follows:
- seven males under 10
- four males 10 thru 23
- two males 55 thru 99
- five females under 10
- four females 10 thru 23
- one female 24 thru 35
- one female 36 thru 54
1850 The 1850 census shows Elizabeth as head of household with six young adult and teenage family members.[2] Separately, the slave schedule[3] lists the 37 people she owned as follows:
- 70 M B
- 40 M B

- 40 F B
- 40 F B

Freedmen's Bureau Field Office Records
In a collection of Field Office Records of the Freedmen's Bureau is an undated list of claims for compensation made by slave owners whose slaves had left their households to fight for the Union in the Civil War. Elizabeth Winder appears as the claimant in nine cases. In all nine, the enslaved men's names are listed next to Elizabeth's, and the note beside the names reads, "Enrolled and mustered."[6]
Elizabeth submitted claims for the following men:
- John Doane (abt.1827-) or Dorum
- Charles S. Sampson (abt.1843-1864)
- James Sampson (abt.1839-1886)
- Edward Dorham (abt.1842-) or Dorum
- Thomas Sampson (abt.1840-)
- Barnett J. Sampson (abt.1838-1903)
- John Poney (abt.1834-1866)
- Mitchell Maxfield (abt.1843-1933) or Maxwell
- Wm. Dorum [This man was included on the list of claims made by Elizabeth Winder, but the application is actually filed in the name of Daniel Lloyd (1812-1875). So Elizabeth apparently filed eight claims, not nine.]
Compensation for Service of Enlisted Slaves
One of the men in the above list, Mitchell Maxfield, enlisted in the U.S. Colored Troops in Baltimore in 1863 and served for three years.[7] Collected with his military records are forms filed by Elizabeth Winder. The cover sheet for her forms reads, "Application of Elizabeth T. Winder of Talbot County for compensation for service of slave Mitchell Maxfield, enlisted September 10, 1863."
"EVIDENCE OF TITLE I, Elizabeth T. Winder of Talbot County, Maryland, do solemnly swear that Michell Maxfield alias Maxwell who has been enlisted in the Second Regiment, U.S. Colored Troops, Co. I; was my Slave for life at the time of said enlistment; and that I became possessed of him by ownership of his mother at the time of his birth, she being my slave by inheritance. And I do further swear that I have not purchased said Slave from any person or persons disloyal to the Government of the United States, with the object of obtaining compensation for the same: and furthermore, that I have no agency for obtaining compensation for any person or persons but such as to my knowledge are loyal citizens of the United States.
[Signed] E T Winder Sworn and subscribed before Allen E. Forrester, Justice of the Peace"
Below Elizabeth's statement appears another one signed by two witnesses:
"STATE OF MARYLAND, City of Baltimore to wit: On this 11th day of December in the year 1866 before me, the subscriber, a Justice of the Peace of the state and city aforesaid, personally appeared Elizabeth T. Pennington a resident of the City of Baltimore, State of Maryland, and Mary Winder a resident of Talbot County, State of Maryland, having first been duly sworn, upon their oaths declare that they reside respectively in the City of Baltimore State of Maryland and Talbot County, State of Maryland; that they are personally acquainted with Elizabeth T. Winder claimant for compensation for her Slave Michael Maxfield alias Maxwell under the Acts of Congress of February 24, 1864, and July 28, 1866, and that they know that said 'claimant hath firmly and faithfully maintained her allegiance and adherence to the Government of the United States, by defending its cause against the Government of the so-called Confederate States of America, in all suitable and practicable ways, and according to her ability and opportunity;' they also swear that they have themselves maintained a like adherence and allegiance to the Government of the United States and they have no interest in said claim.
[Signed] E T Pennington [Signed] Mary Winder Sworn and subscribed before Allen E. Forrester, Justice of the Peace"
Elizabeth filed the same application for eight of the nine men on the Freedmen's Bureau records list. They were John Poney,[8] John Doane,[9] Charles S. Sampson,[10] James Sampson,[11] Edward Dorham,[12] Thomas Sampson,[13] and Barnett J. Sampson.[14] The ninth man on the list, William Dorum, was claimed by Daniel Lloyd of Dorchester County.[15]
