This page's purpose is to record the people enslaved by Frances (Bailey) Shapard and attempt to connect them to their families.

Frances "Fanny" Bailey was born around 1789. Her father Yancey Bailey died in 1804 and she inherited an enslaved woman named Cloe.^[1]

Fanny Bailey married Thomas Shapard in 1811 in Person County, North Carolina, where they were slaveholders. See Slaves of Thomas Shapard for information on that time period. At some point between 1830 and 1840, the Shapards relocated to Haywood County, Tennessee, where they established a large plantation south of the Hatchie River near what is now the town of Stanton.

In late 1840, Thomas died, apparently without leaving a will. Fanny recorded his estate inventory on 3 December 1840 and her son Thomas Shapard Jr acted as guardian to his three youngest siblings who were underage.

A total of 57 enslaved people were named by Fanny Shapard in the estate inventory. They are listed below in the same order as they appear in the inventory. Note: Charles L Bullock and James L Webb were sons-in-law of Thomas, William Shapard was his son, and John McFarland has not yet been identified.
