Biography
Frances Smith was born in Granville County, North Carolina, the daughter of Mary Waugh Downey and James Webb Smith.[1] Around 1810 or 1811, her family relocated to Jackson County, Tennessee, and established the Beech Hill plantation on the Cumberland River near the town of Granville, about 50 miles upstream from Nashville.[2] She married John H Ray in 1839 and moved to Marengo County, Alabama, where John died in 1841. She then moved to Maury County, Tennessee, where her father had given her a large plantation. She married Thomas Hawkins in 1848 and at some point moved to New Madrid, Missouri. Frances (Smith) Hawkins died of pneumonia on 20 January 1859 in Jackson County, Tennessee.

James Webb Smith wrote his will on 20 February 1854 and died on 22 May 1856. His will named 71 enslaved people and included a number of unnamed children.[4] Frances inherited 21 enslaved people and an unspecified number of their children.
