Burgesstown Plantation
Frederick R Cotten established Burgesstown Plantation in Northern Leon County, Florida, between 1850 and 1855. It became one of the largest cotton plantations in Florida, consisting of 8,100 acres. Slaves were used to work 3,800 acres of improved land.
Slaves Purchased in 1851
There is a Bill of Sale from 1851, which indicated Frederick R Cotten purchased 35 named slaves from Cary Whitaker of Halifax County, North Carolina, for $15,000. Dr. Cary Whitaker was Frederick's uncle, and the owner of Strawberry Hill Plantation in Halifax County, North Carolina.[1][2] The named slaves included:
