Historical Account 1954
The following personal account was given July 13, 1954 by Hastings L Jones, grandson of Hasting Jones:
"He [Hasting Jones] migrated from Arkansas in 1860 to Polk County, Eastern Texas. He had a wagon train, cattle, horses, and all kinds of stock. Also a large number of slaves. My dad remembers a lot of negro children. I can remember a lot of the old slaves when I was 5 or 6 years old. Of course they were free then as all slaves were freed in 1863. They lived with the Joneses until death. Some of the slaves Rich, Matilda, Squares, all took the name of Jones. By 1870, Hastings had moved his family still deeper into the heart of East Texas, setting in Falls County, near present day Reagan."[1]
