Background
Henry Laurens Sr. was a partner in the Charleston slave trading company, Austin and Laurens. They had the contract to action the Grant, Oswald & Company slaves from Sierra Leone, West Africa who were imported through the infamous Bunce Castle. Henry's company provided him a handsome income at 10% commission for the eight thousand slaves they sold during the 1750's.[1] He also imported other goods, but by far his most profitable resource was trading in slaves.
Account Book
Business and personal accounts (September 1766-September 1773) kept for Henry Laurens. Several include the sale of individual slaves. A number of entries are for New Hope, Mepkin, Broton [Broughton] Island, Wambaw, and Wright's Savannah plantations.[2]
Probate Inventory
Henry Laurens also owned a large number of enslaved persons. After his death their names and values were recorded in his probate inventory, listed as being at the following locations:[3]
