This page's purpose is to record the enslaved people owned by Ignatius Joy Sr (1687-bef.1780), and attempt to connect them to their families.

Thirteen slaves were mentioned in Ignatius Joy's will, written in St. Mary's, Maryland in 1777. Twelve of them were named in the will. One was not named in the will but was named in the distribution in 1782. Ten of these thirteen people were distributed among Ignatius's four children and one grandchild, while the remaining three were to stay on the estate as long as any of the children remained single. [1] [2]

Rachael and Ben were bequeathed to Ignatius Joy, Jr. along with all of his father's land.

Terry and her son Stephen were bequeathed to Sara Joy.

Nan and Joe were bequeathed to Elenor Clark Joy.

Ned, Rose, and Stephen were bequeathed to Joan Joy.

Bernard was bequeathed to Joan Greenwell.

George, Suck, and Jude were to remain on the plantation "for the use of the children...so long as there is one of my daughters living single on the said plantation."
