Slaves of Izard Bacon of Henrico County

The purpose of this page is to document and identify the slaves held by Izard Bacon (1740-1816) in Henrico County, Virginia

Will of Izard Bacon

In his will, signed December 3, 1817, Izard Bacon made the following statement:
 : Item, It is my will and desire respecting my slaves and their increase that they shall be emancipated as soon as a law can be obtained giving them leave to remain in the State, and in the mean time till they shall be disposed of in the way most consistant with their happiness and so that the proceeds of their labor shall go to the support of the aged and infirm and unfortunate.[1]

1818 Petition to Legislature

In a petition to the legislature, dated December 17, 1818, the trustees of Izard Bacon's estate (Fleming Bates, Lemuel Crew, and Thomas Ladd) asked for a bill to provide orders on the disposition of the 'fifty or so slaves' manumitted in the Will. The petition was granted.[2]

1820 Petition

In 1820, John Winston, a free person of color, petitioned the court to return to Virginia. He was manumitted in the 1815 will of Izard Bacon and had relocated to Pennsylvania, however, he wished to return to reunite with his wife and two children. The petition was rejected[3]
