This page's purpose is to record the enslaved people owned by James C Whitaker, and attempt to connect them to their families.
In 1837 James' father died but the estate slaves were not distributed until 1840. James must have already owned some slaves because his count on the 1840 census was 64 slaves which is far more than he got on from the estate. By 1844 his youngest brother Thomas, still a minor, had passed and his portion of the estate was distributed to the remaining heirs. James inherited an additional four slaves from this transaction.
