In 1851 James was deeded 5(+) slaves by his friend Edward Neufuille in his will. [1] Their names were: Toney, Abram, Flora, and Rinah & her children.

In his will, written in 1860 and executed in March 1863 James names the following slaves:

  • Marcus - "To my sister Mary I leave Marcus the Blacksmith whom my sister Anna generously gave me that he may not be seperated from his wife and that they may share the same lot.
  • Nancy - "I commend to the benovolence of my heirs and Legatees and to the care of my Executors the sewing woman Nancy whose dutiful service entitles her to consideration if she should survive her mistress."
  • Prince - "to my son Daniel Petigru to whom I also give Prince" it does not specify that Prince is a slave or even a person
  • Jim - "I also give him (his brother John G. Petigru) for his life the boy Jim now in possession of Dr. William C. Pettigrew and after his death to Daniel Petigru."

There were also the following plantations and land mentioned in the will, although not stated there may have been slaves included:

  • The Plantation China Grove - left to brother: John G. Petigru for his life
  • Bagfield, Goodwell, Norwood, Tidlam and Ryeworth are to be annexed to Badwell the ownership of which is somehow divided with his sisters
