Emigrants to Liberia
In the early months of 1830 twenty-eight of Joel Earley, Jr's slaves and 2 free born Earley's were sent to Liberia on the Brig Montgomery's Company , and arrived at Monrovia June 1830, via the American Colonization Society. Below is a comparison between those who are listed on the ship's roll with those in the Census. There were 47 enslaved on the 1830 census.[1] Since the actual month of the census is not known, it is impossible to be sure if the comparison is helpful.
On the Brig Montgomery the following Earley's are listed:
- There are 6 Earley males under 10
- There are 7 Earley males bet. 10 & 23
- There are 3 Earley males bet. 24 & 35
- There are 3 Earley males bet. 36 & 54
- There are 2 Earley females under 10
- There are 6 Earley females bet. 10 & 23
- There are 3 Earley females bet. 24 & 35
- There are 2 Earley females bet. 36 & 54
- Total = 32
Note: the extra 2 people are twins aged 12 yrs with only an initial for a first name. I listed them in both male and female categories.
Roll of Earley Emigrants on the Brig Montgomery's Company
One issue is that none of the names on the ship's roll below match any of the names in the above lists, so it is possible that the Earley's below were part of his holdings that we do not yet have documentation. What is clear from the ship's roll is that Mr. Earley of Georgia is recorded as their emancipator.
