Introduction

John Carter II inherited Corotoman Estate from his father, John Carter I in his will. ^[1]

John Carter II owned 110 slaves when he died. His will was proved on 13 June 1690. Five of the slaves he mentions, Chriss, her husband Black Dick, and their three children were given their freedom in his will. Their unnamed "youngest child" is not listed in this inventory. Hence, the number of slaves named in the document is 109.^[2]
