This page's purpose is to record the people enslaved by John Cordes Prioleau and attempt to connect them to their families.
John Cordes Prioleau was born about 1770 and died on 20 June 1825.
In the 1800 Census he was living in St. Johns Berkeley, Charleston County, South Carolina and had 80 slaves.[1] He had 119 slaves in the same parish in 1810.[2] He was listed in Charleston in 1820, with 11 slaves.[3] The John Cordes Prioleau listed in St. James Goose Creek in 1820 was probably his son, but the 110 slaves listed were probably the father's.[4]
Bills of sale for slaves show that he bought two men named Seymour and Jack on 7 January 1819, and he sold the man Seymour on 9 April 1822.[5][6]
John Cordes Prioleau made his Will on 24 March 1816, and it was proved 3 August 1825. He named his wife Mariane as his sole heir and executor.[7]
His estate inventory was recorded on 12 January 1826 and lists 43 enslaved people at his plantation in St. James Goose Creek Parish, Berkeley County, South Carolina. These people were listed in specific groupings, valued separately, then added together as a batch. These groupings are preserved below in case they can provide clues to family relationships.[8]
