Background
John Gambrell I (1755-1834) lived in Anderson County, South Carolina. This page was created to record the enslaved he held during his lifetime in order to help those descendants find their ancestors.
John Gambrell died in 1834 and the enslaved were named in his will and probate papers.
Will
He listed the following enslaved in his handwritten will of 10 May 1830:[1]
- Jane - to wife wife Barbara
- Frank - to wife Barbara, and then to son Matthew
- Mesheck and Eliza together with her 4 children - to executor (however son Henry Gambrell actually received them)[2][3]

Census
John is shown residing in Pendleton, South Caroline in 1790 with one slave in his household[5], and in Anderson District forty years later with 8 enslaved in his household[6]
