In 1850, John was enslaving 17 people in Jacksonville in Benton County, Alabama.[1]
In 1860, John was enslaving 6 people in Jacksonville in Calhoun County, Alabama[2]
In January 1862, five enslaved people were named in John Nisbet's Will:
- "old negroes Dennis and Harriet" inherited by John Young Nisbet
- "a negro boy named Clark" inherited by William Milo Nisbet
- "negroes George and Silvey" inherited by Clara (Nisbet) Walker
