This page's purpose is to record the people who were enslaved and emancipated by John Nixon (1782-1845) and attempt to connect them to their families.
John Nixon's will (item 1) freed all of his slaves, directed that expenses be paid to remove them to a free state and provided $300 for purchase of a lot of land for Sarah and Ero[?] in a free state. The executors account (#85, 86, and 98 on page 322) suggest that they were moved to Ohio.[1] The estate inventory and executor's account do not list any enslaved people by name. Sarah and Ero[?] were the only ones mentioned by name in the will.[2]
The entire list of people emancipated was located in Loudoun County's Record of Free Negroes Index.[3]
The table below lists the number of their freedom certificate and the page on which it is found in Loudoun County's Free Blacks Registration Book for 1844-1861.[4]
