This page's purpose is to record the people enslaved by John Pomfret Webb and attempt to connect them to their families.
A document dated 27 February 1833 in the estate records of John's father James Webb notes a "Legacy of Lucy and her two Children (Edmund and Marthy Ann)" inherited by Alexander Smith Webb and John Pomfret Webb. Lucy and her children were valued at $250 as a group.[1]
In the 1840 census John was living in Person County, North Carolina, and enslaving 15 people ranging in age from under 10 to over 55.[2]
- Males - Under Age 10 = 3
- Males - Age 24-36 = 2
- Males - Age 55-100 = 1
- Females - Under Age 10 = 5
- Females - Age 10-24 = 1
- Females - Age 24-36 = 2
- Females - Age 55-100 = 1
On 13 October 1840, the estate division of John's mother Ann Hunt (Smith) Webb named 28 enslaved people, some of whom were previously enslaved by her husband James.[3] John Pomfret Webb inherited four of these people.
NAME | Enslaver who inherited | Valuation of group | Previously Enslaved by James Webb |
---|---|---|---|
Hanner (Hannah) | John Pomfret Webb | Yes | |
Russell | John Pomfret Webb | Yes | |
Polly | John Pomfret Webb | Yes | |
Child Hanner (Child Hannah) | John Pomfret Webb | $900.00 |
When John Pomfret Webb died on 28 May 1846 his estate included 31 enslaved people who were divided between his second wife Amy Booker (Pattillo) Webb and his five children from his first wife Melissa Lanier (Daniel) Webb.[4][5]
The names of these 31 enslaved people are listed repeatedly in John's estate records, with some variations in spelling which are included below. [6][7][8]
Research Notes
- Because John Pomfret Webb's children were all minors when he died, their legal guardian was John's brother Alexander Smith Webb. Alexander's guardian records are included in John's estate records, and contain a number of references to the enslaved people under his control.[9]
- Alexander Smith Webb died in June 1849 and it appears the five Webb children were farmed out to other relatives, likely with the enslaved people they inherited. As more details are found, they will be attached to the relevant bios.
