This page's purpose is to record the people enslaved by John Webb and attempt to connect them to their families.

John Webb was born in 1747 in Essex County, Virginia, the son of James Webb and Mary (Edmondson) Webb. He married Amy (Booker) Webb in 1772 and at some point they relocated to Granville County, North Carolina.

On 20 May 1771, his father's will was probated and John inherited four enslaved people:

On 21 November 1777, his mother gave John one enslaved man from his father's estate:

In the 1820 census John Webb was living in Granville County, North Carolina, and enslaving 18 people:[1]

  • Slaves Male - Under 14 = 6
  • Slaves Male - 26 to 45 = 6
  • Slave Females - Under 14 = 3
  • Slave Females - 26 to 45 = 3

John died in August 1826 and his will was probated in November 1826 in Granville County. His will inventory listed 22 enslaved people, seven of whom were divided among three of his daughters (who were already in possession of the people) and "all the balance and residue of my Estate both real and personal, I also lend to my beloved wife during her life."

Seven enslaved people were named in John's will:[2]

Fifteen enslaved people were named in John's estate inventory in November 1826, in addition to the seven people above:[3]

In November 1836, about 18 months after the death of Amy (Booker) Webb, there was a sale of estate items of her husband John Webb. Presumably this sale occurred to dispose of the property she had been granted for her lifetime. Thirteen enslaved people were named in these sale records and were purchased by various family members.[4]

Research Notes

  • It is possible that the James named in 1777 is the same person as the James named in 1826/1836, but given the time span and likely ages, I have created two separate profiles for now.
