Introduction

This page's purpose is to record the people enslaved by Joseph Addison (bef.1771-1817) and attempt to connect them to their families.

Slaves

In 1810, the family was enumerated as follows:

1 male and 1 female between ages 26-44,
no sons,
3 daughters under age 10,
1 free "other", and
33 slaves.[1]


Joseph passed away 30 September 1817 at age 47 and was buried at the Brick Church Cemetery.[2] His will, signed 27 September 1817 and proven in Charleston Court on 4 October 1817, was lengthy and detailed, making the following specific bequests and conditions:[3]

— Wife Sophia Moles (George) Addison: "my pew at Saint Paul's Church, Radcliffeborough;" slaves Sue, Will, Phebe, Dye and Charlotte; various chattel and all household belongings
— Daughter Sophia Moles Addison (minor): slave girls Peggy and Sarah
— Daughter Mary Addison (minor): slave girls June and Binah
— Eldest son Thomas Addison: slaves Sylvia and her daughter Betsey; various household items NOTE: Thomas may have been the child of an earlier marriage, for he mentioned that he had been previously married.
— Second son Joseph Addison (minor): slaves Sam and Monde; various household items
— Third son James George Addison (minor): slaves Charles and Henry-Friday
George Wilson: "There is living on my plantation a Mustee man who was born free, the son of a free woman named Susey Wilson. It is my wish & desire that my Executors may always use their best exertions in protecting the said George Wilson and securing and supporting his freedom."
