1857 Petition for Distribution

Raiford Fletcher, the administrator of the late Joshua Fletcher, seeks an accounting and partition of land and slaves in his late father's estate. Joshua Fletcher died intestate in 1857, leaving a considerable estate in land, slaves, and other property; he also left many children to whom, over the years, he has given gifts of lands and slaves. Shortly after the death of his father, Raiford was granted "letters of administration on the goods and chattels, rights and credits." Having sold lands and slaves, Raiford is now "desirous of having and enjoying his share of the real Estate of the said Joshua Fletcher." The petitioner is prepared to appear before the court to account for his actions as the estate's administrator. He further requests that the heirs of Joshua account for the gifts that they received from their father before his death and that the court issue a writ of partition on property that is remaining in said estate.[1]
