Introduction

In the 1840 census Joshua held 10 enslaved people in Fredericksville, Albemarle, Virginia.^[1]

In the 1850 Slave Schedule Joshua Abell held 18 enslaved people in Albemarle, Virginia, United States.^[2]

In the 1860 Slave Schedule J W Abell held 17 enslaved people in Fredericksville Parish, Albemarle, Virginia, United States. ^[3] He also rented one 21 year old male to a D W Burnley.^[4]

The following slaves were found in the Albemarle, Virginia Birth Registers. The first two slave owner entries were listed as Joshua W. Abell. The following three after were listed as Josh W. Abel.
