Inheritance

He inherited the following slaves from his father's estate, distributed in December 1817. [4]

In 1822 he inherited a man named Abram from the estate of Clayborn Maddox, his step-father and guardian.[5] Clayborn noted that the slave had come to him due to his marriage to Josiah's mother.

Distribution of Estate

The following slaves were named in the division of his estate in 1856. [6] The estate including slaves were divided into five lots, the first was chosen by the widow, the other four lots were drawn and assigned to the children.
