Introduction

This introduces the slaves of Littleberry Owen (1814-1852) both named and unnamed.

Research Notes Wade Owens is documented in a Slave Narrative. "His parents were Wade and Hannah Owens, who "came from Virginia and moved into "Jenks Quarters" on the Berry Owens place." The Berry Owens referred to is Littleberry Owen son of Robert Owen. Wade in the 1852 appraisal of the Littleberry Owen estate is the father of Wade in the Narrative.

The above table was created in 1852, and the next table includes distribution information from the lots drawn in 1854. There are some discrepancies in the two lists. This table In includes a sort key starting with 957 or 958 which correlates with the image number for the page in the probate file. The decimal in this number contains a first digit representing the group in order on the page, and second digit represents the order within that group. In the first column which correlates with the numbering in the 1852 appraisal. If not in the prior list, (99) was assigned. This was appended with a decimal such as 99.1 (first allotted name not appraised) to 99.x

The following is a transcription of the allocation made in 1854. The numbers correlating with the 1852 list have been inserted.

The courts divided the enslaved persons and gifted them to widow Ann, sons, Littleberry Jr., Nathaniel Green Owen, Jessie Weathers Owen, Augustus Owen, and daughter Elizabeth Owen.

For the widow Mrs. Ann Owen, by ? which consisted of Emily(21a), her child Dick(21b), Milton(27), Esther(26), Dolly(25), Bob(3), Mark(30), (Sally)(22), Judy(38), and Nero (AKA Rowe 16) which had been valued at $5850.

...was allotted to Littleberry Owen Jr…. Wade(1), Martha & Child(99), Anderson(99), Little Joe(32), Eliza(23), Daniel(12), Jenny(35) valued at the sum of $4575 and is entitled to cash the sum of 21 dollars.

...was allotted to Nathaniel Green Owen… Joe(5), Margarrett(35), Rebecca(17), Osborne(2) and Harry(13) at the sum of $4600.

...was allotted to Jesse Weathers Owens… Andrew(99), Jenny(35), Tom(7), Caroline(20a) and child(20b), (T)ennella(99), Wesley(99), Lewis(15) and Bill(14) valued at the sum of $4575 and is entitled to cash the sum of twenty one dollars.

...was allotted to Augusta Owen… Sam(6), Matilda(19) & Child(19a), Ben(24), Albert(9), and Nancy(37) valued at $4350. She is entitled to cash the sum of Two Hundred and Forty Six Dollars.
