Biography
Mary Webb was born on 22 June 1782 in Granville County, North Carolina, the daughter of John Webb and Amy Booker. On 16 March 1839 she married her first cousin James Webb Smith and relocated to his Beech Hill plantation in Jackson County, Tennessee. She died in January 1859 at Beech Hill.
Enslaved People Inherited in 1826
Mary's father died in August 1826 and his will was probated in November 1826 in Granville County. His estate inventory named 22 enslaved people, three of whom were listed as already in the possession of his daughter Mary.[1][2]

Enslaved People Purchased in 1836
In November 1836, about 18 months after the death of Mary's mother Amy, there was a sale of estate items she had inherited for her lifetime from her husband John. Thirteen enslaved people were named in these sale records and were purchased by various family members.[3] Mary purchased three of these people.

Enslaved People Inherited in 1854
Mary's husband James wrote his will on 20 February 1854 and died on 22 May 1856. His will named 71 enslaved people and included a number of unnamed children.[4]
