These are the 17 slaves belonging to Michael Blue of Hampshire, Virginia on 27 Oct 1840, the day he named them in his Will:

Research Note

  • See Michael Blue's Will for an explanation of the 2 Rebeccas on this list. They are 2 different people, apparently.[1]
  • Although the will of Michael Blue specified that Samuel and Phillis should go to Lawson Blue, circumstances changed. The 1850 Hampshire, Virginia census reported three unmarried sons living with the widow of Michael Blue, Fanny Blue. They were Michael Jr., Lawson, and Garret Blue. Lawson Blue never married, and lived with Michael Blue Jr.'s family until Michael's 1903 death, so the enslaved people assigned to Lawson came to be listed in Michael Blue Jr.'s 1860 Slave Schedule.[2]
