Slaves of Michael Spessard
Five enslaved people were named in Michael's Will of 1848:
Unnamed enslaved persons were documented in the 1820, 1830, and 1840 U.S. censuses, along with Michael's family. It is unlikely that any of the males enumerated in 1820 were the same ones enumerated in 1840, and more likely that at least some of the 1840 men were owned by one of Michael's sons, with whom he and his wife seem to be living.
Because Michael's daughter Catharine did not own in 1850 more than the two people she inherited from her father in 1848, it is somewhat easier to estimate who they might be on the earlier censuses. The other enslaved people are somewhat harder to place, though 1850 Slave Schedules were found for the Brown and Thomas families.
